Ridge Meadows Youth Impact Summit

RMYIS 2014
Participants, committee members and Facilitators at the first-ever Ridge Meadows Youth Impact Summit (RMYIS).

A few of our members had the opportunity to serve as Facilitators at the first-ever Ridge Meadows Youth Impact Summit from November 28-30, 2014. This 3-day program, based off a model of other Rotary Youth Leadership programs in our district including RYLA and YAIL, aimed to inspire students in grades 10-12 in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to make an impact in the community and the world around them. From professional speakers to challenging leadership activities and conquering fears, the weekend concluded with the students delivering a short “Legacy Presentation” about changes they’d like to see in the community to city councilors and school board trustees.

This was an incredible event that we were very honored to be able to take part of. It was wonderful to see the leadership potential grow in so many youth, and we can’t wait for RMYIS 2015! Special thanks to the RMYIS committee for making this weekend happen.

Members of our club spent the afternoon of Saturday, March 22 visiting with seniors at Hawthorne Centre in Port Coquitlam. In addition to serving tea and snacks, we also made them cards to ring in the spring season, and our very own Jessica entertained them by playing the violin. Thank you to Chris M., Kevin, Brianne and Rasmeet for also volunteering their time!

A Night with the Stars Benefit Concert

Vancouver-based band Pigeon Park were among the performers at our benefit concert to raise money for an orphanage in Uganda.

March 20, 2014 marked one of the largest events our club has held thus far! Our “A Night with the Stars” benefit concert, held at Inlet Theatre in Port Moody, was a fundraiser for Jaaja Barb’s Home of Angels Orphanage in Mpumudde, Uganda. The orphanage, started by B.C. native Barb Giraud, protects orphans living with HIV/AIDS in acute poverty.

The night featured plenty of local talent including acoustic singers, bands, and dance crews, and featured plenty of free food and prizes. In the end, we were able to raise $4,025.41 for Jaaja Barb’s Home of Angels! Thank you to all of our guests and sponsors who made the event our most successful one yet.

SFU Hot Chocolate Giveaway

Kevin, Chris M., Janelle & Amber giving out free hot chocolate at the SFU Burnaby campus.

Doing good in the community doesn’t always have to take hours of planning and effort. In line with our Random Acts of Kindness, on February 18 our members took to the Simon Fraser University Burnaby campus to give out free hot chocolate in the Academic Quadrangle. We hope that we were able to warm up some students on a cold and blistery day!

Great Gatsby Fundraiser

gatsby2

Our first major event of 2014 was a Great Gatsby themed fundraiser held at Old Mill Boathouse in Port Moody on January 11. Featuring a live DJ, cash bar, tons of food, and a photobooth, our guests enjoyed a fantastic night in a beautiful venue (and looked great themselves in their 1920’s-inspired costumes). In total, we raised over $750 to be donated to our current international service project: a bus for St. Dymphna’s Special Needs School in Tanzania.

Thank you to all of our friends and supporters who made our first fundraiser of 2014 a night to remember!

Check out pictures from our photobooth on our Facebook page.

Random Acts Scavenger Hunt

One of the scavenger hunt tasks involved purchasing a hot beverage to warm up a Salvation Army volunteer.
One of the scavenger hunt tasks involved purchasing a hot beverage to warm up a Salvation Army volunteer.

Members of our group spent the afternoon running around the Tri-Cities area to perform random acts of kindness for both strangers and people who serve our local communities. Among the tasks that we performed were:

  • Delivering flowers to workers at Eagle Ridge Hospital
  • Bringing Timbits to police officers
  • Giving balloons to young children
  • Purchasing a hot drink for a Salvation Army volunteer
  • Serenading a group of strangers
  • Picking up litter

Thank you to Brianne and Rasmeet for organizing the event, and to Kevin, Anabelle, Eric, Raj, Chantal, Adam, Janelle and Jordan for participating!
